He had weighed the consequences of interfering against the cost of laying low and come up with a compromise. Talking was too personal, too easy to see through. Blows were an appropriately veiled language that would get his point across just as effectively.
What took him by surprise was the bastard’s refusal to obey restrictions. He talked. And talked between heavy hits. And talked through blood and broken teeth. And talked about what he had done to Michael while his brain was pouring out of his cracked skull. And talked about what he would do to Michael as his tongue remained forever stuck in his crushed throat.
His own talking done, he washed his hands carefully. Nothing was so easy to see through as the language a father spoke to his son. He would not use it.

Christina’s enormous luminous eyes were boring into his. Then taking in the results of his previous conversation. Then accepting the imposed language and streaking out of sight. He was stunned how much acceptance hurt.
